First State Chevrolet-Oldsmobile-Kodiak, Inc., established December 17, 1935, is a General Motors franchised, full service, new and used vehicle sales facility. Originally incorporated as Theo. Burton, Jr & Company, Theodore Burton, Jr. and Irwin G. Burton established the dealership as a premier vehicle sales facility in the middle of Sussex County. Theodore Burton, Jr. died in an accident on December 3, 1943. His wife, Olive, became President, and son, Theodore Burton, III, became General Manager. Theodore's brother, Louis, joined the business in 1956 and became President in 1959. Theodore Burton, III, continued to act as a sales representative for the dealership until retiring in April 1992. In August 1974, Robert L. Hansen purchased an interest in the business. He and Louis Burton continued to operate as Theo. Burton, Jr. & Company until April 1976, when he and Lee J. Turek purchased the balance of the corporation from Louis Burton. The corporation was renamed, First State Motors, Inc. d/b/a First State Chevrolet-Oldsmobile, Inc. The original building, erected in 1936, in downtown Georgetown, was torn down and the property sold to Sussex County, after completion of a state of the art facility in February 1991. Now located on U.S. 113 in Georgetown, Delaware, First State Chevrolet-Oldsmobile-Kodiak, Inc. continues to serve Sussex County and surrounding area.
